第35回 Square (手仕舞う 他）
年初から急ピッチで日本株式が上昇していますね。
決算期末でバタバタしていたこともあり、気が付けば桜の季節となりいささか焦っております。
さて、本日の言葉はSquareです。真っ先に思い浮かぶのは「四角」とか「平方メートル（suare meter)」ですが、それ以外にもさまざまな場面で遭遇します。特に金融用語という形で使われていないことも多いのですが、ニュースやレポートなどでも時々出てくるのでご紹介しておきます。
まずは最も一般的な使い方であろうと思われる「～の意見に同意（一致）する」。
以下の1文は、CFOが最近の経済指標と実態経済との乖離にどう折り合いをつけるかという記事からの一説です。
Chief financial officers are looking to square a strong U.S. economy with consumer sentiment showing signs of strain—and trying to determine whether it signals potential risks ahead.

（試訳）最高財務責任者（CFO）たちは、強い米国経済指標と、ストレスの兆候が出ている消費センチメントという実情に合わせ、それがこの先のリスクを示すものかどうかを見極めようとしている。
また、「清算する、支払う（pay money)」という意味でも使われます。

さらに、こちらはニュースの見出しですが、square up to で「勇敢に立ち向かう」という意味で使われています。まさに真向勝負ですね。

続いて、Square off。日本語だと「対決する」という感じでしょうか。

そして最後に、これはおそらく金融特有の使い方と思われるsquare positions.
「ポジションを手仕舞う」とか「フラットにする（ロングでもショートでもない）」を指します。転じてその日の取引をその日のうちに手仕舞い、オーバーナイトで持ち越さない取引手法（いわゆる日計り）もSquaring offと言います。
Squaring off is a trading style used by investors/traders mostly in day trading, in which a trader buys or sells a particular quantity of an asset (mostly stocks) and later in the day reverses the transaction, in the hope of earning a profit (price difference net of broker charges and tax).
四角だけではない、square。おそるべし。
