気になる言葉
～翻訳の中で出会った言葉～

ネイティブでない人間は、なかなか名詞が組み込まれたイディオムというものにピンとこないことがあるのではないかと思います（私だけか）。このgroundもすぐさま「グランド」＝地上と連想してしまうのが悲しいかな、勉強不足の人間の性。ただ、実際の用法では、「立場、見地、地歩」「根拠、論拠、原因」「問題、分野、領域」「背景」などかなり多岐にわたり、ちょっと訳しにくいと思ったことはあるのではないでしょうか。そんなgroundがくっついたmake up groundが本日の言葉です。

 

Make up groundのgroundは「立場、支配域」のような意味で、立場を回復する、復活させるという意味になります。

 

Tesla’s stock had its worst day since 2020 on Monday, tumbling 15%. The stock made up some ground Tuesday.

 

試訳：テスラ株は3月10日、（前日比で）15%下落し、2020年以降で最もひどい相場展開となったが、翌日は値を戻した。

ここで「値を戻した」とか「回復した」というのは金融英語ではおなじみの表現なので、逆に日英翻訳でrecoverとかrecoupに代わって慣用句を使えないかなとチャットGPティー子に聞いたところ、以下のように教えてくれました。

 

1．Narrow the gap（差を縮める）

2. Catch up (追いつく）

受験英単語帳でもおなじみのcatch upも使い勝手がよさそうです。

 

The European Union’s top policymaker said the bloc will protect foreign scientists that relocate to the region as it seeks to catch up with the U.S. and China on innovative technologies like artificial intelligence.

 

EUが、米中に水を開けられているAIなどの革新技術のために外国人科学者の域内移動を支援するという話。

いずれも、現在不利な立場からの地位を戻すというイメージです。英熟語、使ってみるとちょっとかっこいいかも。Recoverに飽きたらぜひ。
